Jackson State Tigers win home opener

This win followed a 17-13 lost to Hampton University over the Labor Day weekend in the MEAC/SWAC challenge in Orlando, Fla.
JSU offense was led by junior running back Bloi-Dei-Dorzon. He had 111 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. JSU quarterback Trae Rutland played an average game. He ran for 64 yards, threw for 57 yards and a touchdown. Carlos Simpson was the leading wide receiver for Jackson State with 19 yards, and a touchdown.
All-American Dominique Johnson, defensive back Malcom Palmer both had 1 interception, and Anthony Johnson had two interceptions to lead the JSU defense.
"It was good getting this win so we can know the feeling of getting one under our belt," said JSU head coach Rick Comegy. "We have not played at the level that we are capable of. We started out slow offensively today, but we got a win."
Stillman's offense was led by quarterback Darrel Nevis who passed for 81 yards and a touchdown. Quinn Porter, who was in the top 10 for rushing in SIAC last year, led Stillman in rushing with 35 yards.
Stillman scored its only points of the game when Nevis connected with Kenny Brown on a six-yard pass play. Stillman's defense gave up 275 total yards, and only converted for 2 of 13 on third down conversions.
Marcus Speaks was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the game and Brown was the most Outstanding Offensive Player of the game for Stillman.
Jackson State will return to action against the Tennessee State Tigers in the Southern Heritage Classic on Sept. 13, 2008 in Memphis, Tenn. at 6 p.m.
